An oscilloscope is a device used to test the functionality of equipment that generates an electrical signal. Oscilloscopes measure the changing voltage of an electrical signal over time, and display the signal as a waveform in a graph with sweeps of voltage on a vertical (Y) axis, and time on a horizontal (X) axis.

It is used to troubleshoot a circuit and goes beyond the simple information you might get with a multimeter.
