While sensors are necessary to help a computer make sense of the world, actuators are used to communicate to and influence it in return. There are many different types of actuators, but all of them take an electrical signal and transform it into another physical entity, like movement, temperature, light and sound.
In interactive projects, actuators are almost always used in combination with sensors – some even have sensors build inside the actuator to measure the correctness or progress of an output.
